We know Spirit is not everyone’s cup of tea, but you cannot deny if you learn how to do Spirit right it can save you BIG money.
Between my sister and I we have a total of 8 people that we must purchase airline tickets for and that can be expensive. If our brother decides to tag along that can add another 2 if his delightful girlfriend comes with us. While we both prefer the amenities and comfort of a Delta flight it is not always financially feasible, like its hardly EVER financially feasible. So we fly the big bird of planes more often than not.
Below are some quick tips on how we make this nickel and dime airline work for us:
This may divide you all but we base our trips on our plane tickets. Now is this possible for everyone, no because we live in a world where we all have to fight for vacation time. But if you have some ideas on when you want to travel you can find cheaper flights by playing around with the dates.
When you find the tickets go to the airport to pick them up. There are extra taxes and fees added on to online tickets and it is always cheaper to buy at the airport. I am headed to Cancun (review coming soon) and the ticket online was $235, I got mine for $175. That money can now go to buying a seat or paying for a bag.
Wait to buy the big front seat. Now if there are two left BUY IT! But if the flight is empty wait to buy the seat at the gate. This can net you savings of $100 or more. Spirit wants to sell those seats and will offer deals to make some extra cash.
I know that sometimes you get some interesting attitudes when dealing with those who work in the service industry. Please do not feel the need to rise to what ever level they are on. Working in the service industry is hard nowadays and sometimes people need a little grace. It will not ever steer you wrong.
Remember why you flew Spirit…its for the savings. Spirit is a budget airline that is on brand with others in the same segment. (Except for Frontier, that is the budget of all budget airlines to ever exist) The seats may not be able to recline, and they aren’t the most spacious but they do the job. Get on the plane, sit down, and enjoy the flight.
